This coiled pot is an experiment in curves. Although there is symmetry across the vertical plane, the other curves were deliberately designed to try and create tension. The opening was given a bevel using a scalpel and the fired surface was polished using water paper. The fired pot was then heated in a domestic oven, and bees wax was applied to the surface. This allows the wax to be absorbed and also gives a degree of water-resistance to the pot, though not of course for hot liquids.
The name of the pot came from its boat-like appearance.
