Antonio Frasconi (1919-2013) was an Uruguayan - American visual artist, best known for his woodcuts. He was raised in Montevideo, Uruguay, and lived in the United States from 1945. I was immediately drawn to the self-portrait shown on the right and thought this might make a challenge as a paper-cut.
The challenges were two-fold. First to find some path through the indistinct edges and regions that still made some sense, and second, to keep the foreground continuous - for some reason, I find that appealing in this medium. Oh, and third, get through all the cuts without cramping out.I almost succeed in the second challenge and leave it as an exercise for the viewer to find where the foreground broke into two pieces. At some point I started adding gold leaf accents to my cut-outs (where appropriate) so I gave Antonio a wedding ring.
